Why do people resent famous people who care?
by Paul on Feb.17, 2009, under Thoughts
So recently I’ve become aware that there is a very strong distain for people in the entertainment industry (i.e., “stars”) giving their personal opinions about politics, religion, etc. Can somebody explain to me where this is coming from? I mean, it’s not many people who feel this way, surely! But I’m just surprised that ANYONE feels this way!
I have experienced it a few times in recent weeks…talking about politics with someone and almost the first thing they say is, “Well what I really hate is famous people volunteering their opinions or trying to be active politically, etc.” I’m completely missing something going on out there… is it a Fox News message that people are starting to repeat? I mean, stars are people too, and often times very passionate ones at that! Why on earth wouldn’t they use the spotlight to draw attention to what they care about? Wouldn’t you? I don’t know…it just seems strange, like with the coming of fame comes the inherent obligation to sit on the sidelines and not get involved. Somebody even disapproved of Bono’s very active stance in making the world a better place! I’m sorry, but even if you don’t agree with his directions you still have to respect the man and give it to him – he cares, he’s a world figure, and he’s using his media appeal to try to make a real difference. Anyway…any thoughts on that one would be welcomed! Maybe it’s a “Southern” thing…
